ReleaseThe business program was opened with the report of Mr. Sergey Kovalenko a Marketing Director of the No.1 Ukrainian solventborne paint producing company ‘ZIP’ (Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine) on the topic ‘P&C Market of Ukraine: Figures, Consumers, Tendencies’. According to the data of state statistics last year Ukrainian Paints & Coatings industry worked almost at zero level, with a very small production increase (for 241 tons). In figures it looks in the following way: 79 821 tons of waterborne paints were produced in 2010, 79 595 tons in 2011, solventborne paints — 88 313 tons (2010) and 81 338 tons (2011). One more group — ‘supporting materials’ — showed growth: 44 523 tons were produced in 2010 and 51 965 tons in 2011. According to classification of Ukrainian state statistics this group includes paints and coatings in addition to driers, solvents, waterborne primers, renders, plasters. Disadvantages of this system according to the type of coating are obvious for professionals but still there is no other statistics. As it is seen from the given figures, share of solventborne coatings decreases and share of waterborne ones does not really change. Market capacity in 2011 showed small growth — 4,4% but it happened owing to import. For 2012 Mr. Kovalenko forecasts decrease of share of solventborne coatings for 5% (at the best case production will be preserved at the level of 2011), increase of share of waterborne materials for 5–10% and big growth in segment of special purpose. There is hope that by 2013 a segment of cheap paints will disappear in Ukraine. Influence of global megatrends for coatings market was highlighted by Mr. Jerome Lafont, Marketing Manager Paints,Coatings, Adhesives of ‘Omya SAS’ (Paris, France). Such factors as growth and aging of population, urbanization and demand for energy products will have a strong influence on market of decorative paints in the near future. It is predicted that by 2025 about 67% of population will live in the big cities and this means that construction of new accommodations will increase and the need for repair works will increase too. Paints & coatings production will also have to be organized in the cities as the basic human resources will be focused just here. The growth of energy consumption is a great problem. By 2030 it will be need for 50% more and this means that a task of saving comes to the forefront. This factor will influence on the growth of use of ‘smart coatings’ — photocatalytic, reflecting and absorbing of infrared radiation, nanotechnologies. ’Green products’ will acquire bigger importance, P&C with low or zero degree of volatile substances, need for systems of external thermal insulation. Transition from the problems of future to present day was made by Mrs. Ruslana Kirichenko, Head of Marketing Department of ‘DECO’ (Kiev, Ukraine) presenting to the attention of participants an analysis of end-users‘ preferences in Ukraine. With what aim do the Ukrainians buy paint? For renewing design only 5% of them do it, at the same time almost half (49%) of West European consumers buy paints just for this reason. But when a coating became useless or the surface got dirty already 36 and 45% of Ukrainian consumers go to the shop for paint. In Western Europe these reasons make 18 and 33% of consumers repaint surfaces. The dominant influence on buying paints has advice of sales assistant at the place of sale, 48% of respondents marked this. The next in importance are pieces of advice of relatives and friends (22%), information from internet and pieces of advice of a site engineer (11%) and the last places are shared by advertising (5%) and specialized TV programs (3%). It is delightful that in Ukraine a consumer pays attention to P&C quality: for 51% it happened to be very important and for 42% -important enough. The most essential characteristics of paint from the point of view of a consumer are not coverage rate (it was named by 9% of respondents) but service durability (34%) and environmental friendliness (19%). Analysis ‘price–quality’ of P&C of Ukrainian production was presented by a Dr. Sc. Mr. Johan Rommens the Technical Marketing Specialist, ‘DuPont Titanium Technologies EMEA’ (Mechelen, Belgium). The situation is very similar to the testing results of Russian paints about which we wrote a lot with the only difference that in Ukraine it is more difficult to trace correlation between price and quality of the material. A constructive suggestion was introduced by Mr. Vladimir Akulov, Sales Director Industry of ‘TOV Tikkurila’ (Kiev, Ukraine) considering a question about limiting competition in state tenders and standards of Ukraine. He appeals to follow international requirements to the choice of a product and systems of painting in which there is no information about a paint producer, or its name. For example requirements to masonry paint must contain not the name of a product or its producer but its technological data (content of silicone etc.). The fact that in branch standards indication of concrete trademarks of production is present is limitation of competition and it means that the other market operators are not desirable in the following branch. The same thing is about tenders. In the requirements for submission of documents the trademarks of products are often indicated (of a certain producer) and in case of replacement with the equivalent a certificate of conformity is necessary which, according to the legislation of Ukraine, is not necessary for P&C and voluntary certification means loss of time and finances. One more requirement — provision of an official confirmation about use of this product for a long time exceeding the demanded service life (that is if operation life makes up 15 hours it is necessary to provide documentation about longer use of this product or system) and it is also desirable to provide information and comments of reference objects. Thus producers or importers of products capable to exceed declared in tender operation life according to their technological parameters are primarily put in unequal conditions of participation. Orientation of international standards was supported by Mr. Vladimir Udovichenko a Deputy of Technical Director of ‘Kompozit-Service’. He emphasized that GOSTs, DSTU at the given stage are an anachronism and slow down further development of a branch and plant technical specifications are actually a validated form of overcomes, they are far from reality and only interfere with normal work of enterprises. Only production procedures on P&C safety can be and must be obligatory. Priority- oriented functions of standards are informing consumers and removal of technical barriers in trade. The simple and clear classification of P&C with explanation for consumers must contribute to decrease of muddy stream of production of the subeconomy level. Though environmental friendliness of products according to the consumer surveys is not at the first place and price has a fundamental importance, P&C producers themselves must take care of their product safety and have an open dialogue with a consumer. In 2012 growth of dispersion consumption for 6-7 % is expected, increase of share of direct deliveries, price growth in general for 7,2–10,2%, appearance of new suppliers in the market and increase of share of special dispersions. A very unexpected report about acrylic dispersions ’Profarb’ for waterborne paints and primers was made by Mr. Radoslav Kulik the Deputy Sales Director of ‘Profarb’ (Gliwice, Poland). The engineering company ‘Profarb’ has bought a research and development establishment of copolymers activity of which started in 1945. This acquisition was made under the influence of market requirements. As ‘Profarb’ projects installations for synthesis of resins and dispersions the clients wanted to receive more detailed data as to the technologies of their production with which specialists of R&D establishment of copolymers are very well acquainted. Now for its clients ‘Profarb’ can correct technologies of synthesis and select formulas that means realizing a principle of individual approach to the fullest. The basic directions of scientific research and use in industry in the institute are acrylic and styrole-acrylic dispersions, water dispersions of homo-and copolymers of vinyl acetate, water dispersions of copolymers of vinylidene chloride, synthetical latexes (styrene, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-methacrylic) and copolymer organosoluble resins. Also variants of substitution of titanium dioxide for company ‘Omya’ fillers, advantages of microtalc of the company ‘Baykal Minerals’ use and also different kinds of equipment for grinding (Netzsch), packaging (Nannini Renalto Srl) and waste water purifications (‘Technostream’) were discussed at the conference. The desire of Ukraine to enter European Union influences P&C market greatly: share of waterborne coatings is growing, questions of P&C safety are being discussed at government level. Perhaps Ukraine will be the fastest of all to produce the correct regulations. From the point of view of Mrs. Olesya Letunovich, a technical secretary ТК BY 25 engaged in a project of technical regulations of Customs Union ‘About Safety of Paints and Coatings’ it is necessary to take European experience of work as a basis but as we are behind Europe it should be done with national addition concerning equipment and testing as we will not be able to adopt everything completely now. As it is clear from the abovementioned information different points of view sounded at the conference and a stormy discussion added some dynamics to it. Combination of reports on market and presentations on separate types of products allowed every participant to choose useful information for himself. But the main and the most important thing is an opportunity of communicating with colleagues, partners and competitors. It is expected that the next conference will gather more than 200 participants. |
